Change Can Be Hard!

 

Anyone who has ever tried to change habits and behaviour patterns would agree that change can be hard.  We’re creatures of habit and once habits are formed, they can feel darn challenging to change.But if the change is for the better, isn’t it worth the effort?Our belief systems play a major role when it comes to change.  Believing that change is possible and adopting a ‘growth’ mindset is a must.

So what is a ‘growth’ mindset?Stanford University psychologist, Carol Dweck, found in her research that we have two mindsets available to us – a ‘growth’ mindset or a ‘fixed’ mindset.  The ‘growth’ mindset believes that challenges, obstacles and undesirable habits can be overcome and that effort is the road to mastery.  A ‘fixed’ mindset believes that challenges and obstacles are to be avoided or given up on and that effort towards change, including undesirable habits, is fruitless.One important thing that most people don’t realise is that the process of changing ourselves, and conditioning ourselves to new and improved habits actually feels incredible!  Once you build that initial momentum it feels amazing and exciting, but many people don’t even get to that point.  Their beliefs and a fixed mindset stops them.Change is a long-term commitment.  However, we don’t always view change in that way so it ends up being a temporary thing and we fall back into old behaviour patterns.

Diets are a great example of this.  Dieters might lose 10kgs, but then they stop the diet, go back to the same habits and patterns as before and put the weight back on – only to end up where they started, needing to lose those same 10kgs again!So how do you achieve change and make it not feel so hard and unattainable?

  1. Adopt a ‘growth’ mindset that believes you can change.
  2. Commit to getting the outcomes you desire and believe that you CAN put in the effort and that you CAN create change for the long-term.
  3. Know the reason WHY you want this change. If you’re unsure of your strong, compelling reason WHY, then you might need to go deep within your heart and soul to find out what it is.  Write it down and remind yourself every day of your WHY otherwise it gets lost in yesterday’s thoughts and disappears (then so too will your commitment).
  4. Set yourself up for success. This requires a plan, timeframes and for you to take action.
  5. Get yourself an accountability coach. Your coach will ensure you stay on track and will be your biggest cheerleader.
  6. Be flexible. Not everything will go to plan and sometimes timeframes blow out.  Just stay committed to moving forward no matter what.  That in itself will be a change in habit for most.
  7. Reward yourself along the way and acknowledge every success, no matter how small.

Don’t ‘try’ to change, ‘decide’ to change.  Remember the wise words of Yoda, “do or do not, there is no try.”Change can definitely feel hard, but the outcomes and benefits you’re rewarded with make all of your efforts worthwhile.  Sometimes we need to push at the beginning, but once that momentum kicks in you’ve got incredible feelings and changes to look forward to.
